Chapter Seven

January 4, 1906

ELIZABETH DOZED OFF as the sky turned from charcoal to pewter, but it was far from a restful sleep. She awoke to find Amelia Rosemont standing at the foot of her bed and sat up with a jolt. Maggie still slept beside her.

“What are you doing here?” Elizabeth demanded.

Amelia looked over at Maggie, pointed a bony finger at her and said, “I want her out. Now.”

She stomped to Maggie’s side of the bed, slid her arms under her, and lifted her up. Maggie remained stiff, stretched out along Amelia’s arms.

A flood of panic erupted as she watched Amelia walk toward the exit with Maggie in tow. She had to turn sideways to negotiate the doorway. Maggie’s weight didn’t seem to bother her or slow her movements at all.

Fear engulfed Elizabeth. She flung back the covers and ran after her as she entered the hallway. “What are you doing?”

“Go back to bed,” Amelia ordered. Elizabeth did as she was told, trying to guess why she complied when she should have stopped the intrusion. When Amelia returned, she slipped in beside Elizabeth.

“Where’s Maggie?” Her desperation rang in her ears.

“She’s gone home where she belongs. Now close your eyes.”

Under some strange spell, Elizabeth did as she was told.

“I know how to pleasure a woman, doctor. Shall I show you?”

Elizabeth took in a sharp breath and woke up. Confusion swirled around her like a dark cloud. The sky had turned dove gray. She looked at the space beside her on the bed, expecting to find it empty. Maggie slept there with a peaceful smile on her face. As Elizabeth stared, a range of emotions washing over her, Maggie turned over and let out a sigh, but continued on in serene slumber.

Elizabeth scrubbed at her face reassuring herself what she had experienced was a dream. A very bad dream.

She spent the next few minutes going over the vision in her mind, looking for any hidden clues. She found nothing new. The warning she already identified time and time again when she encountered Amelia persisted.

Maggie stirred, stretched like a contented cat, and said, “Good morning, Elizabeth.”

When she smiled, Elizabeth’s heart melted. She hated to rush Maggie out, but the dream weighed heavily on her and she worried they’d open the front door and run right into Amelia.

“I hesitate to rush you, but I think it might be best—before the streets fill with prying eyes.”

Maggie studied her before answering. “You’re right. I should go.”

Later, as they stood by the front door, Maggie leaned into Elizabeth and kissed her on the mouth. Elizabeth moaned. Maggie deepened the kiss, parting her lips slightly. Elizabeth’s heart beat faster, reminding her about telling Maggie she’d know what to do when the time was right. Apparently, she discovered something new this morning. Elizabeth ran her tongue along Maggie’s lower lip. Now it was Maggie’s turn to moan.

It would be so easy to drag her back upstairs, back into her bed, and do what she envisioned last night, but she couldn’t take the risk.
